| DATE | MICRONATIONAL FIRST |
| Circa 1680-1947 | The world's oldest and longest living micronation was probably the Indian princely state of Pudukkottai. From the 6th to the 14th century AD, Pudukkottai was successively ruled by the Pallavas, the Cholas, and the Pandyas. When the Pandya kingdom was conquered by Malik Kafur, Pudukkottai came under the rule of Muslim sultans, who held power for about 50 years before being vanquished by the Vijayanagar kings. When the Vijayanagar kingdom disintegrated, Raghunatha Kilavan wrested the country from them in 1680, and appointed Raghunatha Tondaiman, his brother-in-law, as viceroy. Pudukkottai thus came under the rule of the Madurai Nayak Dynasty. After the death of Raghunatha Kilavan, Raghunatha Tondaiman became the ruler of Pudukottai. Thus the Thondaiman Dynasty took root and flourished. The princely state of Pudukottai was created by Raghunatha (Raya) Tondaiman. In later centuries the Thondaiman rulers, while nominally being feudatories of the Ramnad state, often pursued an independent foreign policy (just like any micronation would do today), a trend common in all parts of India at that time. The kingdom initially did not have fixed boundaries, and was called "Thondaiman country" (after the Thondaiman rulers) until the end of 18th century. The kingdom started to have fixed boundaries in the early 19th century. It extended for 52 miles from east to west and 41 miles from north to south, and encompassed an area of 1,178 square miles. The Thondaimans provided military aid to the British and the Nawabs of Arcot in the 1752 siege of Tiruchirapally, against Haidar Ali and Tippu Sultan, and finally against the Palaiyakkarars. This act by the Thondaiman rulers spared the kingdom from being assigned zamindari status, and Pudukottai was instead assigned as a Princely State (also called Native or Indian State). Marthanda Bhairava Tondaiman declared, in 1888, that Pudukkottai had become an independent kingdom, and in 1889 issued an Amman cash coin (Amman kasu). That was the only coin ever issued by the Kingdom of Pudukkottai. Pudukkottai remained the only princely kingdom to maintain its independence in the whole of Tamil Nadu. The kingdom eventually acceded to the independent Dominion of India in August 1947, and merged with the Madras state in the following year. Rajagopala Tondaiman, ninth and last ruler of the princely state of Pudukkottai, died in 1997 at the age of 75. |
| Circa 1865 | World's first extant micronation starts in 1865
when Matthew Shiell Dowdy, a rich Irishman resident of
Montserrat, buys the island of Redonda, and with tacit
consent from Victoria, Queen of England, becomes the first
King of Redonda. In 1880 the crown passed to the son,
Matthew Philipps Shiell, who was incoronated by the
Methodist Bishop of Antigua with the name of Felipe I. He
reigned until 1947. Felipe became a famous writer, and
conceded many titles, especially for cultural and literary
merits. His successor was John Gawsworth, who under the name
of King Juan I was monarch of the island until 1967. After
1967 at least two parallel claims to the Kingdom of Redonda
exist (Arthur John Roberts, 1967-1989, styled as King Juan II; and
Giancarlo Ezio Noferi, styled as HRH Giancarlo Ezio I of Montedoglio,
1967-). Today there are at least four living claimants. |
| Circa 1871 | First micronational paper currency: the oldest extant note is the Five Dollar Emperor Norton I note, which was released in 1871; however, the oldest notes ever issued by Emperor Norton I were probably the Fifty Cent notes (1, 2). |
| Circa 1929 | First micronational coins: the Lundy Puffin, first issued in 1929 by the self-declared 'King of Lundy', Martin Coles Harman, who was an English businessman. These were two coins — the Half Puffin and the One Puffin, which were rated at the same nominal value as the British Halfpenny and Penny (source). |
| 01/11/1929 | First micronational postage stamps: the half puffin red, and the one puffin blue, the first stamps issued on Lundy island, which has the oldest private postal service in the world. The first stamps were issued on 1 November 1929 (source). |
| Circa 1933 | First film specifically related to micronationalism: "Duck Soup" (1933). Originally a box-office disaster, this is now considered the finest Marx Brothers film ever. The immortal Groucho Marx plays Rufus T. Firefly, dictator of the tiny country of Fredonia, who declares war on neighboring Sylvania, over the love of a woman, the wealthy Mrs. Teasdale (Margaret Dumont). A savage (and often anarchic) satire on politics, war and [micro]nationalism (source). |
| Circa 1940 | The first apparent reference in French to the
word micronation

| Circa 1943 | The first apparent reference in English to the word micronation in book form appears in The battle for Buenos Aires, by Saxtone E. Bradford (New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company): "Careful groundwork had given Germany a highly unified micronation within the boundaries of Argentina in many ways better prepared and better organized than . . ." The first reference in English to the word micronations in a popular book appears in the 1978 edition of The People's Almanac #2, where David Wallechinsky and Irving Wallace write: "Established in 1972 by a declaration of sovereignty by a group of Californians, the Republic of Minerva has more claim to authenticity than most micronations because it actually has some land, although it disappears at high tide. The republic consists of two coral reefs 17 miles apart in the South Pacific Ocean some 3,400 miles southwest of Honolulu and 915 miles northeast of Auckland, New Zealand." |
| 26/10/1967 | The earliest apparent instance of use of the word micro-nation in English in journalistic form appears to be in the 26 October 1967 edition of Australian newspaper The Age, on page 5, under the article "A micro-nation", which mentions the now independent country of Nauru. The first apparent instance of use of the word micronation in English in journalism in its modern form, i.e. without a hyphen, is in the 8 October 1973 Time magazine article "TOURISM: Red into Black", where the word is first mentioned in the phrase, "As S.B.M. goes, so goes the micronation, which is made up of about 4,000 Monegasques and 25,000 resident foreigners." S.B.M., by the way, is a reference to Société des Bains de Mer SA, or the Société Anonyme des Bains de Mer et du Cercle des Etrangers à Monaco, a Monaco-based holding company primarily engaged in the operations in two sectors: games and hotel business. |

At the time, Mr. Lennon was being threatened with deportation because of a 1968 marijuana conviction in Britain. Neither of them ever lived at that address. |

| DATE | MICRONATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL DEVELOPMENT |
| 18/01/2010 | The article "Fifth World agriculture is the wave of the future" is published. It shows that the certified organic farming we often see today is really Fourth World in scale and philosophy, and through Fourth World agriculture it is impossible to grow food sustainably, because there simply aren't enough farmers to have a small, local, organic farm everywhere. The only solution to the problem of industrial agriculture, and to the problem of unsustainability of a Fourth World agricultural model, is that a lot more people have to grow food, both for sale and at home. The only solution is Fifth World agriculture, i.e. do-it-yourself (DIY) agriculture, where "the producer(s) and the consumer(s) are the same person(s)". |
| 02/04/2010 | News of UK government's proposal to turn the Chagos Archipelago into protected area, and the backing of the decision by several environmental and science bodies shows that not only Fourth World agriculture is unsustainable, but also Fourth World environmentalism, the kind that is massive in size, but microscopic in terms of its respect for human rights. Fourth World environmentalism also proves to be unsustainable, the kind that piggybacks on governments and intergovernmental organisations just like the most despicable bank, corporation, or protected interest group; the kind that turns weekend fishermen into people who now ridiculously need a licence for a hobby, a licence which is also a tax in disguise which supports criminal organisations such as the United Nations; the kind which place the rights of professional environmentalists ahead of the human rights of indigenous peoples like Chagossians, who will now be required a permit for subsistence fishing, all while destructive commercial fishing goes on in places like the Galápagos Islands, and right inside the so-called "nature reserves". The idea that Fourth World environmentalism also needs to be replaced by Fifth World environmentalism, DIY environmentalism, marks the birth of micronational environmentalism, at least as a realistic and unique concept. |

Although the takeover was not necessarily an organised one, some claim it happened as a protest against the Danish government. On 26 September 1971, Christiania was declared open by Jacob Ludvigsen, a well-known provo and journalist who published a magazine called Hovedbladet intended for, and successfully distributed to, mostly young people. In the paper, Ludvigsen wrote an article which widely announced the proclamation of the free town, and the headline was, "Civilians conquered the 'forbidden city' of the military". Ludvigsen also became the co-author of Christiania's mission statement, which says, "The objective of Christiania is to create a self-governing society whereby each and every individual holds themselves responsible over the wellbeing of the entire community. Our society is to be economically self-sustaining and, as such, our aspiration is to be steadfast in our conviction that psychological and physical destitution can be averted." The spirit of Christiania quickly developed into one of the hippie movement, the squatter movement, collectivism and anarchism, in contrast to the site's previous military use. |
